We put the finishing touches on Holidays at Kar-Fre Flowers yesterday. Hung the last of the prints, added batteries here and there, mopped the floors and got ready for you to come visit! New this year is our Roast a Marshmallow, Shop S’More area in front of the shop. Each weekend this fun area will have all the goodies you need to roast a marshmallow or make a s’more to enjoy.
It’s our Small Business Celebration weekend! A chance for us to remind you how special it is to shop your local Smalls and that your commitment to the Smalls is a commitment to ALL that you love about our community! Why? When you spend $100 at your local Smalls $68.00 stays right here in the community. Spend that same $100 at the National Bigs and only $43.00 stays local. Shopping locally means you embrace what makes our community unique! Think how dull shopping would be if we only had Bigs to shop at. We’d all purchase the same things–there’d be no uniqueness, no specialness. You know how they say variety is the spice of life–I’m pretty sure whoever said that was talking about Smalls!
A few years ago (I’m sure it was longer than I think, but that would make me older, so…..) I decided that a sweet treat for Sycamore’s Chocolate Weekend would be a batch of Grandma Rhynders’ fudge. I made a batch with nuts and a batch without and it was a hit! The next year I thought it would be fun if we had a home baked sweet treat each weekend and so a tradition was born! We kick off each season with Oooey Gooey Bars a yummy mix of oatmeal, caramel, and chocolate.
The funny thing about this simple idea which I wasn’t prepared for was that people would want the recipe! So here is our recipe for Oooey Gooey Bars:
Kar-Fre’s Ooey Gooey Oatmeal Bars
1-14oz. jar of Caramel ice cream topping
3/4 cup butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350.
Melt the butter and combine with flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Press slightly more than half of the oat mixture into a greased 11″ x 7″ pan. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
As soon as you remove from oven sprinkle baked oat mixture with chocolate chips and pour the caramel over the chips. Top with the remaining oat mixture.
Bake for 20 minutes; cool.
Cut into bars and enjoy.
